PESHAWAR: Punjab won the trophy of the 52nd Senior National Hockey Championship by defeating Balochistan-A by 2-0 in the thrilling final played at artificial turf of Qayyum Sports Complex here Tuesday.

Both Punjab and Balochistan showed brilliant display of hockey with some fine short-passes, attacking display, coordination, and combined moves were also witnessed.

After the resumption of the second-half, Punjab took the lead through Zubair Riaz who sounded the board with his powerful hit from the top of the circle in the 47th minute.

After getting lead, Punjab kept up pressure and consolidated the lead in 64th minute when Zubair Riaz slammed in a perfect goal on the fourth penalty corner. It was his 7th goal in the Championship on penalty corner conversion.

Balochistan, after conceding two goals, tried their hard to level the tally but they were not allowed by pack defence of Punjab and thus Punjab won the final by 2-0. Punjab took five penalty corners against six awarded to Balochistan.

At the end, the chief guest Muhammad Akram Khan Durrani gave away gold, silver and bronze medals to Punjab, Balochistan and NWFP teams besides winners' trophy to Punjab.

The chief minister also announced as cash prize of Rs. 50,000/- for the winners and Rs. 30,000 each for the runners and third position holders.
