Learn Iranian Baluchi Grammar
« on: October 22, 2005, 02:29:37 AM »
In Iranian Baluchi the verbs are slightly different to that shown on these forums.

Firstly we have to select the stem for the verb. I will select a verb as an example. Apologies if my system is not the same as you use here.

Verb - Rapten (to go)

The stem is "raw"

So we have

Man rawan (I go)
To rawey (you go (sing.))
Aa rowt (he/she/it goes)

Ma rawin (we go)
Shoma rawit (you go (plural))
Aawan/Aayan/Aahan rawant (they go)

These are the simple present tenst verbs.

Iranian Baluchi Verbs (simple)

Salam Jan Mohammad,

I warmest welcome you in Baaskani diwan (F) , and really glad to see your work in Language section.
Hope you will continue it.

Yes you are right the verb you have used is slightly different but can u believe this is totally same we use in our routine conversation. :)
Actually it's our bad luck that we don’t have proper roman baluchi system so whatever we are using here is just because of our own research work. And we really need support and guidance of linguistic experts.
I am still fail to get standard book for Roman Baluchi and over net all available versions are based on writer's own dialect.

Versions of Baluchi you have used here is Makkurnai Baluchi (spoken in coastal region of Iran and Pakistan)

The difference you have felt here is just because of influence of neighbor languages like Urdu, Persian and others, otherwise its same.  :)

Please keep continue of your good work. We are looking forward for more

Thanks and Regards

Raji

(P.S. I apologize for using ‘Mohammad’ instead of 'Mohd' because I feel hesitation to use short form)

Iranian Baluchi Verbs (simple)
« Reply #2 on: October 23, 2005, 01:28:17 AM »
Raji,

Thank you for your kind words. I hope I am able to provide some insight in the Makrani dialect in the future.

Regarding transliteration into this script, I use a system that provides a roman letter for each Baluchi letter. Unfortunately, with Baluchi being as it is spelling is not a major thing. I say it as I pronounce it in Makrani Baluchi.

Do not apologise about calling me Mohammad, I understand. My name is not Jan Mohammad, but it is a name I got from my Baluchi friend. I thought it better to use this rather than my English name.

Makrani Baluchi Grammar Adjectives

For those of you who know Farsi, here is a quick guide. Be warned that Iranian Baluch can use adjectives in the same way as they do in Farsi.

Verbs work differently in Baluchi, instead of Ezafeh (i.e. Ketab-eh siah (black book)) it is Siahin ketab.

So what you do is add "in" or "een" to the adjective and that's how it works. See examples below.

shahdin zoban - Honey language
wash rangin kuh - Beautiful mountain

nouns

HEre we will look at nouns made from verbs, such as "eater" and "writer".

First you take the verb and find it's present tense stem. Examples of those below.

Warten (or Warag) - To eat (stem: war)
Wanten (or Wanag) - To read (stem: wan)
Wapten (or Wapsag) - To sleep (stem: waps)
Katheten (or Kathag) - To win (stem: Kath)

Next you add "owk" to the stem, and this makes the following:

Warowk - Eater
Wanowk - Reader
Wapsowk - Sleeper (can also mean something else)
Kathowk - Winner, profiteer

Please note that adding "owk" or "ok" to the end of a name is a way of talking about someone in a disrespectful way. Examples of this are.

Moridok
Mahmudok

Baluchi prepositions and postpositions

Here are some basic Baluchi prepositions and postpositions. It is a long way from a comprehensive list, but more of a basic guide.

Sara - on
Miz-e sara = on the table

Cira - under
Ketab-e chira = under the book.
Mani ghalam ketab-e chira ent = My pen is under the book.

Borzaga - Above
Mashin-e borzaga = Above the car

Jahla (or Jahlga) - Below

Taha - In
Ges-e taha/Lug-e taha = In the house
Man ges-e taha an = I am in the house

Maan - also means "in" but is used as a preposition, the same as the Farsi "Dar"
Maan ges/Maan Lug = In the house
Man maan lug-an = I am in the house

Dhana - Outside
sabakjah-e dhana = Outside the school
Mani dost sabakjah-e dhana ent.

Dara - Outside
This is used in the same way as "dhana"

Shah = From (used in the same way as "Az" in Farsi)
Man shah Lanadan Paris-a shotan = I went from London to Paris

Chi = From
Man Landan chi Paris-a shotan = I went from London to Paris

As always, I am not a native Baluch, so please excuse any mistakes I may have made.

Definite and indefinite objects.
Definite objects

Most of the time a simple "a" sound is added to the end of the object noun. Any adjectives used do not change.

Man ketaba gendan - I see the book
Man sohrin ketaba gendan - I see the red book
Man aa sohrin ketaba gendan - I see that red book

Some Iranian dialects appear to use the Farsi "Ra"  instead of the simple "a"

Indefinite objects

There appear to be several ways to do this. Either a "yak" is placed before the object in question or an "i" is placed at the end of the object noun. Also using both is very common. See the examples below.

Man yak ketab daran - I have a book
Man ketabi daran - I have a book
Man yak ketabi daran - I have a book

As for adjectives, here is how it works.

Man yak sohrin ketab daran - I have a red book
Man sohrin ketabi daran - I have a red book
Man yak sohrin ketabi daran - I have a red book
