The rainbow of gems
It was a drizzle in summer, in the late afternoon when I was walking in the park with a peaceful mind devoting my thoughts towards nature, its wonderful art, its sacred beauty and its divine commendable creation.
Gazing at the skies I saw a colourful rainbow, engulfing the sky from east to west, sparkling in the rays of the sun. Its gleaming mystifying beauty called to me. It beckoned me.
Was it telling me something? I wished I had wings and I could fly to its parade of alluring beauty. Suddenly, I felt lifted from the ground as if an angel deity, and felt myself rising above the ground, towards the vivid arch of the rainbow. “Was I in heaven or was this a dream come true?” I wondered.
As I stepped on its curved path I saw that the rainbow was made of thousands of gems. Shining and sparkling. Rubies were the red variety of the species called corundum. And emerald (green), aquamarine (blue), bixbite (red), goshenite (colourless), heliodor (yellow), and morganite (pink) were all varieties of the mineral species called beryl.
Suddenly I woke up. I rubbed my eyes and felt disappointed. It had just been a dream but it left me with a desire to know more about the gems I had seen.
As I perused books and surfed the Net I realised that the characteristics that made these stones beautiful or desirable was the unusual optical phenomena within the stone, an interesting inclusion such as a fossil, rarity, and sometimes the form of the natural crystal.
Gems, classified into precious stones (cardinal gems) and semi-precious stones, are crystalline minerals or petrified material that can be used as a distinct and advantageous remedial measure in astrology. Gems are considered to be the best for strengthening the positive influences of planets. They intensify the rays of the planets they represent. Each gemstone is specific to a certain planet and takes positive traits of that planet. Since ancient times, people have sensed powerful energies emanating from gemstone crystals and their ability to bring good fortune and ward off evil. These beautiful, cold, hard stones are believed to provide supernatural powers that would protect the wearer from illness, misfortune and danger. In modern times practitioners have taken to using the energy that they believe lies locked away inside a crystal as a healing force.
Gems not only empower a planet but also bring about all-round prosperity and happiness, and have also been found to be very useful in curing various diseases as all the disease and disorders are caused by various combinations and distributions of planets.
While selecting a gem one should be careful and aware of the appalling ill effects, which a gem can have if not worn according to the planetary arrangement in one’s horoscope. Selection of a wrong gem can be a direct and straight forward threat to life.

Diamonds are specifically renowned as a mineral with superlative physical qualities; they make excellent abrasives because they can be scratched only by other diamonds.
The “Cullinan Diamond”, found in South Africa, is the largest rough diamond ever found, it weighs 3,106 carats.
Amethyst is a purple coloured stone, which helps the wearer in several ways. It wards off the tendency to switch over from one activity to another, protects the wearer from sudden and unexpected happenings, dangers of witchcraft, devils and evil spirits. It is also good for financial stability and is good for those who find it difficult to manage their financial affairs. It is also good for modern managers, computer scientists and financial experts, particularly those engaged in major or big enterprise. It is good for people born in the month of January or February and for Pisces (those born between February 21 and March 20), particularly those who may wish to obtain professional gains.
Emerald is velvety green in colour. The most coveted emerald is that which is radiant and smooth and has neither cracks nor dots. Emerald harmonises and strengthens the positive influences of mercury. Ruby is a pinkish red stone, and generally occurs in crystal of six-sided prism. Ruby enhances the powers of the sun. An individual whose sun is well placed in the birth chart can never be unsuccessful. There are several attributes which decides the superiority of the ruby. For instance, if it is immersed in milk, the red rays should break the liquid or if it is rubbed on a stone, the stone may show signs of friction but the ruby must not lose weight.
When examined in the early morning sun against the mirror, if it throws out its rays on the lower part of the mirror it means the ruby is of very high quality. If on the other hand the stone lacks lustre, is brittle, has cracks, or is spotted, it is regarded as flawed. On wearing a ruby one is protected against the effects of poison.
Thus, gems are the true rainbows in minerals; they grow in the sea and reflect their colours in the sky illuminating a rainbow. They intensify the rays of the planets and control the emotions of humans if worn.
